Manual Osteopathy is a non-invasive, manipulative therapy that looks at the body as a whole dynamic functioning unit. Manual Osteopaths are trained to look at the body’s misalignments and use mobilizations to restore the balance within the system. These light mobilizations, combined with Soft Tissue Techniques, and Muscle Energy Techniques, encourages the body’s musculoskeletal system back into alignment, improving overall bodily system communications, which encourages and stimulates the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Many clients report needing other forms of costly treatments less frequently when manual osteopathy is incorporated into their self care routine. Though it's important to remember that it is a complimentary therapy. This means that your osteo treatments will compliment, not replace any professional medical advice or treatments.
In 1874, Andrew Taylor Still .formulated his principles of osteopathy. This was heavily motivated by the deaths of three of his children in an epidemic as well as a reform movement against the then rather primitive armamentarium of drugs and surgical techniques at the time. Something he got plenty of experience and observation of/with while serving as an army physician during the American Civil War. His emphasis has always been on the importance of body mechanics and the relationship of body structure to function. Still's vision of the Dynamic system as a whole, was not limited to the physical, but included mental and emotional health. 148yrs later, Osteopathy is still a growing profession.
